When collective anxiety reaches its threshold, society instinctively selects a portion of itself as “sacrificial victims,” assigning them to bear the violence that would otherwise implode from within. To rationalize this collective murder, it reconstructs its own cognition: first by fabricating a sacred mission, then by naming violence as “justice,” and finally by forming a “silent complicity” through which the sacrifice is fulfilled.

The victims may be “witches,” “heretics,” “minorities,” or even “terrorists.” After these scapegoats are destroyed, the collective returns to a semblance of harmony which built upon murder. until it once again collapses under the weight of fear and desire.
